With many habits, the sooner you start practicing and developing good habits, the better chance you will have that you will continue with them. We all know that good study habits are essential to educational success. Good study habits are an important part of any student’s success. We probably can diminish the academic dishonesty by promoting good study habits with students, and letting the students know that good study habits are very important when it comes to school. Still, even procrastination can be overcome with proper study habits, and improving your study habits is the key to better studying. Good study habits are a great tool to have in the toolbox of life.

Many of the tips for success for online students are the same as those for students in an onsite classroom. Consider asking your school’s student council to take on a study tips project. Following a few simple study tips can help students effectively learn new concepts and theories. There have been numerous published tips students can use as a guide for good study habits.

A good way to stay organized is to use folders so you child can keep his/her assignments until needed and it is a great way of staying organized. Once children reach the grades where homework and tests are part of the curriculum, there are many things parents can do to encourage good study habits. An effective way to study is to study before and while you do the homework. A little amount of homework may help elementary school students build study habits. Being organized and having homework routines are the most important things in helping your child develop good study habits for life.

All learning, however, is a process which settles into certain steps. Students with learning problems, however, may still have generally inefficient and ineffective study habits and skills. Becoming aware of your learning style will help you to understand why you sometimes get frustrated with common study methods.

Effective study habits are a very import part of the learning process. Good study habits are all about keeping to a daily routine and giving all subjects equal treatment. If your study habits are weak, take a “study skills” course or have someone show you good study habits. The problem is that those high school study habits are hard to shake. Hard work and good study habits are assets that should be nurtured. Motivation and study habits are obviously crucial as well. Good habits are important for all students to protect investments of time and money and to achieve educational goals. After that experience your study habits are permanently altered, this will help your own preparation as you start teaching and last a lifetime. The main priorities are class attendance, time management, and great studying habits are necessary workings for an academic success.

Becoming a fighter pilot isn’t something that happens overnight. It requires lots of time, dedication and perseverance if you want to be successful. A special type of person is required to join such an elite group. Funnily enough, most people think that becoming a fighter pilot is mostly about flying, when in fact that isn’t the case. You also need to successfully train as an officer. So you’re primarily an officer, even if you continue on to be a fighter pilot. Your primary job is to defend the USA against its enemies, and any career aspirations are secondary to that.

There are three possible ways to train as an officer - service academy, Officer Candidate School (OCS) or Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC). As a high school student, you should apply to a service academy if you want to become an officer. You can choose between the Air Force Academy, Annapolis (Navy & Marines), West Point (Army) or the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. All of them put you through rigorous military training, and you also obtain a Bachelor of Science degree. If you have a strong aptitude to advanced math and science then you’ll have a much better chance of succeeding.

If you’re planning to enter one of the academies, then be aware that the competition to get in is fierce. You’ll need a high school grade point average of 3.8 as a cadet, as well as a SAT score of 1300. This has to include a minimum of 1050 for verbal and math. It’s a good idea to have a strong extra-curricular activity record as well, even more so if those activities demonstrate leadership or athletic skills.

So if you want to enter a service academy, earn a commission and receive a college education, the path is simple. It’s not easy though - you’ll need to perform very well in high school, and not just inside the classroom. It takes a long time to work your way through the application process. You certainly don’t just hand over a simple form and expect to be accepted into a service academy. You need three letters of recommendation, extensive paperwork, and even to be nominated by your Congressman. To improve your chances of success, start preparing your application early, and certainly don’t start any later than your junior year.

The bad news is that just because you made it into the service academy, pilot training slots are still extremely limited. Being accepted by the academy is a piece of cake by comparison. However pilots are in demand right now, as all the military streams are struggling to retain the pilots they have. So if you’re keen to be a fighter pilot, it’s a little easier than usual to obtain a slot. How long that lasts, nobody knows.

You might also find that The Reserve Officers Training Corps is the best option for you. With this, you study at a college or university as normal, but add in the officer training requirements. On top of your regular studies you will have to attend military training and courses, spend at least one summer on a training camp and attend weekly meetings. Most of the time you live as a civilian, only donning your military garb when you’re actually attending military classes. When your officer training is complete, you can then apply for specific programs such as pilot training. Competition is tough, and you’ll need to pass some rigorous academic, medical and testing requirements to be successful.

For those who decide a little later in life to become a fighter pilot, The Officer Candidate School (OCS), sometimes called The Officer Training School (OTS), is the best route. Within 4 months OCS will take a college graduate with no background in the military and turn him into an officer. Again, you have the opportunity to apply for pilot training school when you qualify as an officer, but the competition is just as fierce. It’s also necessary for you to begin training as a fighter pilot before you turn 27, so this third option is only available for a limited time.

With each decade the face of education has changed to reflect the current trends in education. The policy initiatives of each president, governor, community leader and parent have been aimed at transforming children’s learning environments into the ideal situation. While these initiatives may never succeed to meet every child’s needs the combined result of their work has created an environment where education can now be tailored to meet the needs of every child through online schools.

Much like the advent of the search engine and booking our own airline travel, the Internet has introduced the nation to online education. To many, the commercial products available from higher education degree granting giants like the University of Phoenix define online learning. However, to a growing population of Americans, online schools have come to define the middle ground between home schooling and personalized public education.

While charter schools continue to spring up across the country, there are a select few that have been created in the charter school mold simply because the education establishment can not keep pace with today’s innovations. In Ohio for example, the Electronic Classroom of Tomorrow (ECOT) was created in 2000 not to revolutionize charter schools, but to bring to Ohio’s children and families leading education content in a format designed to enable every child to succeed. ECOT provides every child with an education option that delivers to each student exactly what they need while providing the comprehensive state standards based education that is the hallmark of successful public and private schools.

Other online schools and content companies such as the Florida Virtual Academy and K12 Education are part of a growing trend that brings together the real-life education community and the technology community. In many instances this partnership is a thorn in the side of traditional education and educators who see only standard classrooms as the answer to the ills of the American k-12 system

Online schools have revolutionized the workplace for skilled teachers and administrators. The result of this union is the ability to create a tailored classroom for gifted, struggling and needs-based students that, until the advent of online learning, were often segregated to specialty teaching groups to meet their potential.

The education landscape has changed and for many brick and mortar school districts this is a hard fact to face. The local school boards and education departments in America have begun to realize that business as usual isn’t he solution to a rapidly advancing world and have begun to embrace the assets of online education.

Unlike the as-we-know-it classroom the online environment can be adjusted to meet the needs of every child and instill the state standards required of students since the advent of the No Child Left Behind Act without stagnating the classroom experience. From thousands of courses to graduation test practice sessions and immediate intervention opportunities, online schools offers to the students and families of 2006 what the computer breakthroughs of the past several decades offered to the business community. Simply put, online schools have the ability to provide every individual with the right information in the right format at the right time for optimal success.

Online schools were once considered the wave of the future. That future is now and the online revolution continues to shape the world of real life education without the boundaries of classroom walls.

In the past, a degree was a badge of distinction. While it still has some of the same allure today, a degree is now considered almost a necessity to make a satisfactory living. In today’s competitive world, continual learning has become an integral part of success.

People serious about financial stability will find the time and exert the effort required to achieve a degree.

Individuals who were thrust into the demands of life and family responsbilities before being able to complete college in the past were at a decided disadvantage because it wasn’t feasible for them to go back later and get that degree.

Thankfully, with the advent of online bachelors degrees afforded by educational institutions who have acknowledged complicated life situations such as job and family committments, people can now go back and finish that degree and move ahead in the world.

Pursuing an online accredited bachelors degree enables students to move beyond the limitations and inconveniences of attending a college campus, or university.

In short, online bachelors degrees afford people the flexibility of setting their own pace.

However, if you want your degree to be recognized by employers in the real world you should make sure you focus only on an online accredited bachelors degree. Accredited universities are the most prestigous. There are some unscrupulous degree mills out there who will take your money and offer you worthless degrees.

One should not assume that just because typical B.S and B.A degrees require 4 years that you will necessarily spend the same number of years getting an online bachelors degrees. Indeed, if you really push yourself, such degrees can be achieved in as little as 18 months.

It is determined that individuals attaining a bachelor’s degree make on an average $20,000 more dollars a year than those with only a high school diploma or equivalent.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the average annual income for high school graduates is $27,038. However, those with a bachelor’s degree enjoy a starting annual income of $51,206.

Online learning presents a prospective future, but there are certain universities one must know to look for. It is essential the university chosen offers a legitimate online accredited bachelors degree program.

Getting that bachelors degree can mean not only more money and a better life for you and your family, but more pride and an immense feeling of accomplishment.

Online Courses Change the Face of Education
by Aldene Fredenburg

A few short years ago, when a handful of colleges (some a little suspect) began offering online courses, the whole idea was considered offbeat. Now many mainstream colleges and universities around the U.S. and throughout the world are offering courses online, some leading to a bachelor’s or even a master’s degree.

Both private and state-run colleges are offering courses through the Internet culminating in degrees ranging from Information Technology to Accounting, Psychology, and Business Management. In addition, private, for-profit businesses offer courses in specialized subjects. Even Donald Trump has gotten into the game; in the summer of 2005 he announced the creation of Trump University, teaching online courses including “How to Buy a House” and various real estate development and management courses, led by instructors with pretty substantial credentials, including a business professor from Dartmouth College.

Why Study Online?

With the constantly shifting work scene, it’s becoming essential that workers keep up to date on the demands of their profession, and even expand their knowledge base as a hedge against outsourcing and all the other threats to job security. Online courses are an easy way to keep abreast of information from current computer software and hardware to the latest business practices.

It’s impractical for most fulltime workers to take time off from work to attend college, and attending evening classes can really cut into valuable family time. On the contrary, logging onto the Internet in your own living room, at a time chosen by you, can allow you to fit valuable learning into a hectic schedule with minimal disruption. You also have unlimited access to the educational institution of your choice without having to pick up and move - you can live in rural New England and access schools in California, Arizona, or wherever you want.

Studying online is also a good way to prepare for a change in careers; training that you might not be able to find locally is available for you on the Internet. Of course, if you want to prepare for a new career without necessarily informing your boss, it’s a lot easier to keep that fact a secret than if you’re caught hanging out at the local college three evenings a week.

How to Pick an Online College

Once you’ve decided on a course of study, there are a few ways to decide which online college or university to choose. One place to start is the university system in your own state; although dealing with your own university doesn’t guarantee good online courses, the fact that it is an established, accredited institution suggests that it applies strict standards to its online courses.

Dealing with a nearby college for your online education needs has an additional benefit; you can actually meet with college officials if you want, and do some research on other students in the area who’ve taken the courses, with the goal of gauging the quality of the course and the student’s educational experience. While this can be done online, it’s not as easy.

If you want to go farther afield for your online education, you can do a Google search to find colleges and universities in other locations offering courses over the Internet. One website which lists both accredited colleges and universities and training schools is elearners.com. The site offers a wealth of information about a lot of good online programs, but is not comprehensive; for instance, the state of New Hampshire has a university system and other colleges which offer online courses, none of which are listed.

A final thought - make sure that before you sign up for an online course, you know how it operates. Does the course you want take place at certain times of the day, or is it constructed so that you can log in any time of the day or night? A regularly scheduled online course may offer the additional advantage of real time interaction with a professor and other students, but may not fit in with your schedule. So check this before you sign on.

In information age, whether you’re a CEO of a fortune 500 company, a small business owner, a talented independent consultant, a top-notch computer programmer, a housewife or a college student, the way to stay on the top of the game is really about how you absorb new information or the way you learn.

Learning is the process of acquiring knowledge. Unfortunately, there has been no consensus on what knowledge is for centuries. To make things simple, knowledge about a subject is about what it is and/or what it can do to the world. Learning or obtaining new knowledge often changes the way we think and/or the way we act.

What to Learn - The Elements of Knowledge

Regardless the what you want to learn, there’re a few things in common for learning anything. The first step for effective learning is to think about what to learn about a subject..

1) Learn about Facts - The statement “Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ” is a fact. To learn a fact is to remember. Effective learning about facts involves understand the reasons behind the facts and relate the facts to what you’ve known already.

2) Learn about Concept - A concept consists of two parts: (1) an identity and (2) the meaning (description or definition) associated with the identity which is often expressed by a group of other concepts. With the correct or proper identification of a situation, we are able to retrieve and apply other knowledge related to that concept to solve problems or guide our actions. The challenge of understanding a concept is that one concept may look similar to other concepts from some aspects or perspectives. A concept is the basic building block of more complex knowledge structures. A frequently used learning aid for acquiring concepts is multiple choice exercise to help learners to distinguish one concept or definition from others.

3) Classification - A classification is a group of closely related concepts in hierarchy. They are grouped together in hierarchy because of the similarity, but the purpose of the grouping is to show the differences. A frequently used learning aid for classification is grouping exercise. In the exercise, learners select a list of objects (lower level concepts in the hierarchy) into a number of categories (higher level concepts).

4) Procedure and Steps - A procedure is a sequence of steps. Procedural Knowledge allows people to performance actions step by step. The focus of learning is to ensure that learners don’t think/act in wrong sequence. A common learning aid for understanding procedure/steps is to allow learners to restore a random set of steps to sequential order.

5) Principle or Rules - Principles are explanations or predictions of why things happened in the world. Principles involve relationships between concepts. A principle consists of preconditions and consequences. If preconditions meet, then consequences occur.

Computer software, such as Computer Based Training or CBT software, utilizes the taxonomy of knowledge to develop learning aids for effective learning.

How to Learn - Relate what you don’t know to what you know

Learning is a joyful experience for the things we love, and is a frustrating experience for the subjects we are lack of interesting. We’ll enjoy learning if we can relate new topics to the things we know well. We’ve learned something if we can relate the things we don’t know to the things we know.

How Much You Have Learned - Knowledge Levels

Knowledge levels measure the proficiency of applying knowledge.

Remember - Remembering is the ability to retrieve the structural and behavioral representation of knowledge (definition of a concept, or sequential steps of a procedure) for given situations.

Use - Using or applying particular knowledge is the ability to utilize knowledge to solve real world problems. Well-structured knowledge can help the application of knowledge.

Creation - Creation refers to the ability to re-structure or to generate new knowledge from what you have already known.

The GMAT is a computer-adaptive test that is designed to measure aptitude, rather than achievement. It currently consists of an essay section, which requires two free-response essays of 30 minutes each; and two multiple choice sections, one quantitative and one verbal.

The writing samples constitute the Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) score, which is scaled from 0-6 in half-point increments. The “Total Score,” comprised of the quantitative and verbal sections, is exclusive of the writing assessment, and ranges from 200 to 800. Though the Graduate Management Admission Council® (the organization that owns the test) claims that scores for the quantitative and verbal sections run from 0-60, it is commonly believed that scoring above a 51 on either section is now impossible. Two-thirds of test takers score between 400 and 600. The 99th percentile begins at 740 or 750, depending on the individual test.

Any online university course has a few prerequisites like a computer, a phone connection, and an Internet Service Provider. With these basics in place, any student anywhere in the world can enroll for the programs being offered by an online university.

After enrolling you will typically be given easy-to-use Internet access software to facilitate quick and smooth retrieval of lectures, questions, and assignments. Since there are no time schedules and frames, the instruction material can be downloaded anytime and reviewed offline at your convenience.

Online research libraries and services are available from the university to cater to the students’ research requirements. The programs are designed to fit in interaction with other students and professionals from the field. This helps the students enrich their assignments before they discuss it in an academic environment with their instructors. Instructors also guide the students through the courses to avoid any learning hitches.

Although this multi-interaction offline scenario enriches the student’s learning experience, the spontaneous classroom scenario is missing in an online course. For some students, the class interaction could be more invigorating than learning online.

However, an online program offers you almost unlimited flexibility. Each course is completed over five to six weeks and students can take breaks between courses. Since the interaction is asynchronous, as in email messages, there are no schedules or fixed timings for classes either. A student doesn’t have to rush from work to meet a class time. Whereas this could also serve as a demotivator for certain students who perform better under strict schedules and timetables, it is advantageous for people with hectic work environments, and for people who can exert self-discipline in setting an effective timetable.

How do GMAT scoring algorithms affect you? by Cindy Anderson

In my two decades of experience as an educator, I have worked with hundreds of prospective business school applicants during their preparation for the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT). Recently, I used my extensive experience in this arena to help design the GMAT Exam Simulator software distributed by Upstart Raising to GMAT Preparation providers and tutors worldwide. Since we began offering this educators’ software direct to students through the CAT Prep.com website, I have received many inquiries from MBA candidates interested in the finer points of how we successfully emulate GMAT scoring within our software. In the next few paragraphs, I will attempt to shed some light on this subject.

The actual calculations for raw, scaled sectional, and cumulative scores are not published by Educational Testing Service (ETS), the current publisher of the actual GMAT exam, and the goal of the GMAT is to produce scores that are consistent year to year. In other words, a 650 from several years ago is supposed to be equivalent to a 650 today. To meet that goal, the scaled sectional scores continually fluctuate with regard to the associated percentile. For example, average quantitative scores have been rising for several years and it now takes a scaled score of 51 to reach the 99th percentile while a 48 now represents only the 87th percentile. By comparison, in the verbal section, there is a 7 point difference between the 99th (a score of around 45) and the 87th percentile (around 38).

Since these types of scoring adjustments are not announced publicly, the only reliable way to monitor these scoring fluctuations is to use observations of actual test scores. So clearly software algorithms must be continually monitored and adjusted to provide accurate scoring assessment. At Upstart Raising we devote the large majority of our effort towards the reliable reproduction of the total cumulative score with regard to test taker performance. We continually adjust our formula for cumulative score generation along with question pool content to reflect the observations and feedback of actual test takers. In stark contrast, many inferior GMAT preparation software products use static formulas and question pools that bear no resemblance to the current exam.

It is important to note that there is no simple relationship between the number of questions answered correctly during a single GMAT session and the associated cumulative score. Each question in each section of the GMAT is assigned a unique weight and earlier questions in the section are worth more than later questions while quantitative questions are generally worth more than verbal ones. Students should be aware that the cumulative score on the GMAT is calculated in increments of 10 points. So, the difference between a 690 and a 700 is only one “tick”. This difference could be attributable to a difference in the number of correct responses, but that is not necessarily the case. 10 points is so narrow a margin in the cumulative GMAT score that the order of your incorrect responses could be the determining factor in whether you receive a 690 or 700.

For example, if you miss 3 verbal questions towards the end of the section during one GMAT session, but miss the same 3 questions in the middle during another session, your second session could easily be scored 10 points lower. This is one reason why we coach students to give more attention to the earlier questions on each section. Quite simply, the earlier questions are worth more.

I hope this information helps resolve some of the questions pertaining to the mysterious GMAT scoring algorithms. If you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us. If you haven’t already, we suggest you read our instructions on how to “Verify Your Preparation Level” using our simulator. The instructions are available on our main GMAT Exam Simulator webpage.
